Commentary Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), English composer. The 2nd of his 9 symphonies was composed 1910-1914. The score shows that this 1st edition from 1920 only was a stage in his development of the music. The most extensive of the deleted passages is to be found in the finale where, in addition to other cuts no fewer than 25 bars are struck out in the closing epilogue, a section of the symphony which had already been shortened in the 1920 edition from the 105 bars of the 1914 first performance version to 85 bars. The revisions in the present MS were incorporated in the later editions.
