MS 5432
MS Short Title MOZART: LE NOZZE DI FIGARO
Text WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART: LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, COPYIST'S FULL SCORE USED AS STICHVORLAGE; WITH ADDITIONAL PARTS FOR TIMPANI AND TRUMPETS FOR THE FINALE OF ACT II, WITH THE RECITATIVE AND ARIA "GIUNSE ALFIN IL MOMENTO" REPLACING SUSANNA'S "DEH VIENI NON TARDAR" AT THE END OF VOL. II
Description MS in Italian on paper, Wien, ca. 1786-1807, 2 vols. 796 pp. (complete), 30x23 cm, single column, (25x18 cm), ruled on 14 and 16 staves by the copyist F. Salzmann, signed by him, with extensive additions and corrections and casting off marks.
Binding Austria, early 19th c., half calf, sewn on 4 cords.
Context The autograph of KV 492 is in Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. An early copyist's score from 1786 of Acts I and II is in Donaueschingen library, with substantial changes from the 1st edition published in Paris 1807/08 by Magasin de Musique, plate 566. The present MS seems to be the only known Stichvorlage of the full score. Due to music variations from the 1st ed., it cannot be for this or the following reprints, nor is it for the 1st German ed. by Simrock, Bonn and Köln, plate 1603. It could been intended for a full score edition by Imbault in Paris from ca. 1795 which preceded the 1st ed, but not a single copy of this edition survives, so a comparison cannot be made.
Provenance 1. F. Salzmann, Wien (1786-1807); 2. Sotheby's 8.12.2009:93.
Commentary 10 May 1786 Torricella copyists in Wien advertised in Wiener Zeitung that they could supply copies of the full score of Figaro. The present copy could be such a copy, revised and used as Stichvorlage for the 1795 Imbault edition or an unknown early edition, that never came to publication or all the copies were lost.
