SIBELIUS: DIE STILLE STADT OP 5/5

MS 5544
MS Short Title SIBELIUS: DIE STILLE STADT OP 5/5
Text Jean Sibelius: Die stille Stadt, song with text by Richard Dehmel, op. 50 no. 5
Context The 6 songs in opus 50 are based on poems by German authors, while all the other over 90 songs by Sibelius have texts in Swedish. These 6 songs were composed at the height of Sibelius creativity, in the same period as 3rd symphony (1907), the symphonic fantasia Pohjola's Daughter (1906) and the violin concerto (1903-1905)
Provenance 1. Sotheby's 6.12.1999:193; 2. Bloomsbury Auctions London 31.3.2015:176
Commentary Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is the most important of the Nordic composers, composing in a variety of always new and unexpected styles. While the 3rd symphony is in a neo-classical style, the song Die stille Stadt is rather impressionistic in character.
