Context Berlioz' first symphony, Symphonie Fantastique, was composed in 1830. His Grand Traité was first published in 1843 and was a groundbreaking work on instrumentation and orchestration, where Berlioz included examples from his own works, including the 3rd movement "Scène aux Champs".
