Commentary Text 1: There are 115 miracles altogether. The original "canon" comprised 33 miracles, but even before the growth of the cult of the Virgin Mary in Ethiopia in the 15th c., numerous pious additions had been made to the Arabic original text, which was translated into Ge'ez in the reign of Dawit I (1380-1412). The superb cycle of the 14th c. miniatures can be compared to those of the Kebran Gospels and the Aheyya Fäjj Qwesqwam Gospels. The 15th c. miniatures are of outstanding strength and originality by an artist unattested elsewhere.
